The Art of Eating Softly: My Golden Gut Ritual

This year, my goals are rooted in curating a soft, gentle, and harmonious way of living. As I get older (nearing my 30s now), I find myself longing less for speed and more for slowness—for the kind of life where I can move gently, give and receive with kindness, and see both myself and the world through a gentler lens.

Don’t get me wrong—I still have big dreams and plans for the future (I’m a dreamer at heart). But what I’ve come to realize is that it’s all a balancing act: between taking inspired action and pausing to check that all my inner gears are working smoothly. Metaphorically speaking, those gears—my body, mind, and soul—need to be in flow with one another.

We often hear that “flow state” means being so immersed in something that time seems to disappear. But I believe our bodies and soul have their own rhythms too. And when the golden trifecta enters flow together—or resonates —we can use our essence in the most aligned way: to heal, to dream, and to become.

Over the years, I’ve had to learn what my own optimal conditions are—from diet, sleep, and movement, to even the aesthetics I prefer (colors, textures, scents). It took consistent self-reflection (and sometimes, reluctant growth) to shed beliefs that no longer fit who I’m becoming.

In recent months, I’ve felt pulled—almost by some supernatural force, or maybe just the discomfort of staying the same—to “clean up” my life. I don’t have a close role model for how I want to live (in truth, I’ve kept my heart closed for a long time). So instead, I turned to strangers on the internet—people whose mission is to live with alignment and ease.

I was fascinated. Each of them had such a unique way of living in alignment. With time, I’ve gathered their wisdom, gently reshaping and weaving it into my own personalized way of being. I’ve created a little menu of cozy, mindful living—and I’m so excited to start sharing that journey with you here.

Nourishing the Body - Listening to my Gut

Our bodies are our temples—sacred, intuitive teachers that speak to us in subtle (and sometimes not-so-subtle) ways. For me, one of the most important lessons my body continues to teach me is how deeply everything is connected—especially when it comes to gut health.

It’s said that our gut is like a second brain—directly influencing not just our digestion, but our mood, energy levels, and overall sense of well-being. In my own life, I’ve come to notice that the first sign that something is out of balance always shows up in my appetite.

Growing up, I dealt with persistent gut issues—bloating, cramping, and an inconsistent or nonexistent appetite. Strangely enough, relatives and family friends would often praise my thin figure, but their compliments only drew attention to the pain and inflammation I was quietly battling. I was never taught about gut health, and when I tried to bring it up to my parents, I was dismissed—told I was exaggerating, or making excuses.

One of the biggest triggers? Cow’s milk. I was unknowingly lactose intolerant, but every morning, I was pressured by my parents to drink a full glass before school. The result? Stomach pain, discomfort, and the added stress of having physical education first thing in the morning while feeling sick.

Bloating became a constant companion—an uncomfortable, swollen reminder that something wasn’t right. But no one in my family was into wellness, let alone holistic healing. When I gently suggested that some of my mom’s cooking might be a trigger, I was met with disbelief and brushed off as dramatic. I didn’t even have the language for what I was experiencing. I saw myself as “out of shape,” which eventually led me to pursue fitness—not as a celebration of my body, but as a desperate attempt to fix it.

I’ll share more about my fitness journey in future posts, but what ultimately made the biggest difference wasn’t movement—it was food. Specifically, how I listened to my gut. I was just a preteen with no role models, no guide—just me, and a growing awareness that my body was trying desperately to communicate with me.

Over time, through trial and error, I’ve learned how to support what I now call my “golden gut.” These are the small, intentional changes that have helped me regain balance—especially during hormonal shifts and stress.

My Golden Gut Guide: A Cozy Checklist of Gentle Shifts That Made a Difference

These changes didn’t happen overnight. They were soft pivots—intentional choices made from a place of self-awareness and care. Think of this as a cozy menu of what’s helped me nourish my gut and reconnect with my body, one thoughtful step at a time.

1. I Switched to Non-Dairy Milks

One of the first things I did was cut out cow’s milk. This seems like an obvious change, especially with how it's normalized to drink more non-dairy milks, with coffee shops and cafes offering non-dairy milk alternatives. However, when I was a preteen, I saw making the switch from cow's milk to non-dairy milk alternatives as a small act of rebellion, a small act towards taking charge of my own wellbeing (and the gateway to holistic healing). Oat milk (I like the Elmhurst 1925 unsweetened milked oats), macadamia milk (milkadamia unsweetened macadamia milk), and even black sesame milk (Three Trees black sesame) became my new go-tos.

2. I Began My Day with Bone Broth (and Sometimes, Raw Honeycomb)

Instead of jumping straight into food or caffeine, I start my mornings slowly—with warm bone broth (I like the one from Bluebird Provisions because it's mild, clean, and easy to sip) to ease my body into the day. It’s calming, grounding, and gives my gut a chance to wake up gently. Occasionally, I’ll also have a small square of raw honeycomb. While it contains sugar, it’s unprocessed and full of enzymes, antioxidants, and nutrients that feel like nature’s first offering. It’s a sweet, earthy ritual that reminds me of softness and simplicity.

3. I Prioritize Protein Before Sugar and Caffeine

I love a good buttery flaky pastry, but I started noticing how it spiked my energy, then left me crashing. These days, I try to have something with protein first—like kefir or unsweetened yogurt—before anything sweet or caffeinated. It helps stabilize my mood and keeps my digestion much calmer.

4. I Swapped Coffee and Matcha for Moringa

As someone sensitive to caffeine, even matcha began feeling too sharp for me. I discovered moringa, and it’s been such a gentle alternative. Still energizing, but without the jittery spike. I love sipping it in the late morning or early afternoon, sometimes with oat milk and a drizzle of honey (or maple syrup during the colder seasons for an extra cozy feel).

5. I Shifted Away from Heavy Red Meats

This one’s been tricky, especially coming from a Chinese household where pork and beef are staples. But I noticed how sluggish I felt after heavier meals. These days, I lean more toward fish, seafood, chicken, and even tofu—not only do they digest more easily, but they also feel lighter in my system. It’s not about cutting anything out completely, just listening to what feels best right now.

6. I Prioritized Whole, Gentle Foods

Instead of strict rules, I simply began gravitating toward foods that felt comforting and clear—like steamed vegetables, warm soups, and grounding herbal teas. These meals don’t just feed me; they calm me. I don’t follow a rigid diet; I follow how my gut feels.

7. I Let Go of the Urge to “Fix” Myself

This is still something I work on every day. For so long, I felt broken because I didn’t feel “normal.” But I’m learning now to approach my body with kindness instead of criticism. If my digestion feels off, I check in with myself, not shame myself. This mindset shift alone has been a form of healing.

Wrapping Up: A Body Tended With Care

Tuning into my gut has been one of the most empowering things I’ve done for my health. Not because it gave me instant results, but because it taught me how to listen. My body speaks in whispers—and now, I actually pause to hear them.

These small shifts have helped me reconnect with myself in ways I didn’t expect. Not just through food, but through presence, patience, and love.

In the next post, I’ll be exploring the ways I’m nourishing my mind—from clearing out overstimulation to creating soft spaces for clarity and calm. Because our inner world needs tending, too.

Until then, may you sip something warm, listen to your body’s wisdom, and find softness in the ordinary.
